Gluten free emergency food
May 24, 2011
After seeing pics of food going to Joplin tornado survivors (MREs, pop tarts, cereal bars, and canned ravioli), I asked the Ozarks Food Harvest if they needed gluten free donations too. Their answer, yes! Ozarks Food Harvest needs gluten free non-perishables and diabetic-friendly items as well.
As noted on their Facebook page, Joplin is overwhelmed with unsolicited donations. They need supplies, of course, but FEMA is requesting that all donations go to the Springfield address below.
Where: Ozarks Food Harvest, 2810 N Cedarbrook Ave, Springfield, MO 65803
Here are some of the items I included in the gluten free care package above:
- Larabars
- Kind Fruit and Nut Bars
- Envirokidz Crispy Rice Bars
- Glutino Breakfast Bars
- Enjoy Life Granola
- Glutino Crackers
- Blue Diamond Crackers
- Dinty Moore Beef Stew
- La Tortilla Factory Wraps
Another way to help: follow the Gluten Free Joplin blog written by the Southwest Missouri Celiac Support Group leader in Joplin, Rita Greenstreet. Contact Rita at glutenfreejoplin@gmail.com if you’re interested in donating products directly to them. Thanks for spreading the word!
Want to donate to the next care package headed out on Tuesday? Free Range Cookies will be collecting gluten free non-perishable foods Wednesday through Friday from 12-6pm and Saturday from 12-3pm.
Edited to add: there’s a gluten free food drive happening in Kansas City, MO too. Details at Johnna’s 52 Sweets!

Thank you so much for mentioning the effort in KC! We need to meet in the middle one day soon…or I need to come to St. Louis.

I hope you get a big response to the food drive in KC! If you can tweet from Joplin, I’d like to hear about any specific needs.

I’d suggest following the Gluten Free Joplin blog http://glutenfreejoplin.blogspot.com/ first. Just saw on twitter that a kind soul in Texas purchased cases of products on Amazon to ship directly to Joplin. You can contact Rita, the Celiac Support Group leader in Joplin, at glutenfreejoplin@gmail.com
Thanks for asking!

This is wonderful! Do you have a paypal address where I can send money to help out?
June 17, 2011 at 7:59 pm
No, but here are a couple of ways you can put that money to use.
1. Follow the Gluten Free Joplin blog written by the Southwest Missouri Celiac Support Group leader in Joplin, Rita Greenstreet. Contact Rita at glutenfreejoplin@gmail.com if you’re interested in donating products directly to the support group.
2. Ozarks Food Harvest is also very happy to receive gluten free non-perishables at this address: Ozarks Food Harvest, 2810 N Cedarbrook Ave, Springfield, MO 65803
You can either purchase gluten free items off Amazon and ship to Joplin or go shopping locally and fill a large flat rate box from the post office with non-perishables. Thanks for asking!
